A Unified Theory of Work Place Harassment: Psychodynamics of Adult Bullying and Mobbing

Luis de Rivera

Work Place Harassment (WPH) is referred to as adult bullying in the U.K. and in the U.S.A. and as mobbing in the European mainland. Psychological harassment, in all of its varieties, is a complex psychosocial syndrome generated by an interaction of dynamics created by the abuser, the victim and the psychosocial group to which they both belong. All three factors are necessary, and none of them, by itself, is sufficient. Together, these dynamics of abuse are activated and reactivated in a cyclical manner, crystallizing into a stable system – a vicious cycle whose duration and consequences depend on the strength and fortune of the victim. This book provides valuable insights for the detection, prevention and eradication of this increasing problem.

Bullying in the WorkPlace: An Organizational Toolkit

Elaine Douglas

Bullying is not just confined to the playground. A psychologist/ trainer specializing in behavior and interpersonal relations offers a combined manual and toolkit for human resource and other personnel to deal with the problem of psychological harassment on the job. While the statistics cited on the scope of the problem are from British sources, bullying seems universal. The manual portion addresses why people engage in such behavior, and how management can put in place an anti-bullying policy.

Bullyproof Yourself at Work! : Personal Strategies to Recognize and Stop the Hurt From Harassment (the Work Doctor Bullying Series)

Namie, Gary; Namie, Ruth; Hughes, Mark

Workplace Bullying is the deliberate, repeated mistreatment of good employees by harassers who ignore all traditional boundaries of gender, race, age, and organizational rank. The authors, in this book and through the national nonprofit organization–Campaign Against Workplace Bullying–have introduced the term to working Americans. BullyProof Yourself At Work is the first American book and the first volume in The Work Doctor’s Bullying series focused exclusively on the topic of workplace bullying.

About one-fourth of all employees are affected directly by a bully’s tactics. BullyProof Yourself At Work! is written for individuals who face tyrants at work who threaten their sanity, careers, and relationships with co-workers and friends. The first steps teach how to recognize bullying when it is happening and how to stop being surprised by the fundamentally different way bullies and their Targets (the recipients) think, act and see the workplace. Eight chapters are devoted techniques that can prevent or stop the self-defeating cycle into which Targets regretfully fall

Fables and the Art of Leadership: Applying the Wisdom of Mister Rogers to the Workplace

Donna Mitroff, Ian I. Mitroff

Fred Rogers is one of the great icons of American culture and the values and philosophy for which he is famous have stood the test of time. Fables and the Art of Leadership brings those same values and philosophy to the workplace, where they’re now needed more than ever. This unique and timely work is for everyone who aspires to become and be a better leader. Mister Rogers didn’t expound abstract principles to help children face up to the problems they encountered; instead, he created and told countless fables and stories. Ian and Donna Mitroff’s book uses those fables to help managers master the most difficult challenges they face: achieving significant change; fostering creativity; curbing rudeness; promoting leadership, managing crises, and many more. It is their new interpretations for the workplace that will make Fables and the Art of Leadership a classic in business studies.

Comebacks at Work: Using Conversation to Master Confrontation

Kathleen Kelley Reardon, Christopher T. Noblet

The workplace guide to putting “I wish I’d said” moments in the past

Ever wish that you could have a “do over” after a conversation at work? Do you often find yourself regretting what you’ve said to a coworker—or kicking yourself for not saying something better, stronger, or more precise? If so, you’re like most people, and in Comebacks at Work, management professor and consultant Kathleen Kelley Reardon, Ph.D., provides the tips and tools you need to know what to say—and how to say it better—next time.

In this compelling, entertaining book, Reardon argues that we are responsible for 75 percent of the way we’re treated at work, and our success—or failure—at the workplace depends largely on how we handle ourselves in conversation with our colleagues. To break free of the stale scripts and expected actions that allow politically astute people to manipulate us, we must increase our conversational awareness and effectively employ what Reardon calls “comebacks.” Comebacks at Work provides a game plan for doing so and explains:

  • Why some comebacks work, while others fall flat;
  • Why our mind goes blank when we are confronted, and how to overcome that response;
  • How to determine which comebacks work, and when to use them.
  • Every conversation is different, and while many situations are common, one set of comebacks isn’t enough. Offering a personalized repertoire of comebacks and a plan for using them strategically as well as the skills you will need to package them for maximum effect, Comebacks at Work will prepare you for any difficult conversation that comes your way.

151 Quick Ideas to Deal with Difficult People

Carrie Mason-Draffen

If you have ever wished you had the equivalent of a “Nanny 911” to defuse tensions in the office, your wish has come true. 151 Quick Ideas to Deal With Difficult People is the ultimate guide on how to face challenging employees and coworkers. The extensive topics in this book deal with how to handle characters ranging from Bunglers to Backstabbers to Bullies. Few books on difficult employees, if any, offer such an extensive assortment of the characters you’re likely to encounter at work and how best to deal with them. When faced with difficult employees, too often managers and coworkers lack the skills for handling the stressful encounters, so they throw up their hands in complete exasperation. Well, all that ends with this book. You’ll learn how to: • Keep problem employees from setting the tone in the office. • Take steps to turn troublemakers into team players. • Keep them from demoralizing or scaring away other employees. • Know when to cut your losses. • Avoid hiring troublemakers in the first place. • Confront bullies, harassers, and ageists. • Keep a backstabber from sabotaging your career. • Keep an aggressive colleague from commandeering your meeting. • Deal with colleagues who infringe on your time.

Bullies, Tyrants, and Impossible People: How to Beat Them without Joining Them

Ronald M. Shapiro, Mark A. Jankowski, With James Dale

The impossible people who make life’s journey so difficult are everywhere—at the office, in restaurants, on airplanes, living next door, members of your own family. They’re . . .

• your “nothing is ever good enough” boss

• the “no price is ever low enough” client

• the next-door neighbor who redefines the meaning of paranoia

• the maître d’ who looks through you as if you don’t exist

• the father-in-law who you know is always thinking about how much better a life his Janey or Joey would have if only  married to someone other than you

Ron Shapiro and Mark Jankowski give you a simple and highly effective 4-point plan for dealing with all of them and more—N.I.C.E. Their system shows you how to neutralize your emotions so you don’t just react but act purposefully and wisely. It enables you to identify the type of bully, tyrant, or impossible person you’re facing—the situationally difficult (something has happened that turns an otherwise reasonable person into a temporary terror); the strategically difficult (she has empirical evidence that being difficult is a strategy that gets results); or simply difficult (being difficult is his 24/7 M.O.). Then you’ll learn how to shape the outcome by controlling the encounter and, finally, how to get “unstuck” by exploring your options.

Using colorful stories from all walks of life— “He called me the scum of the earth and it went downhill from there,” “First, lock all your vendors in a small room,” and “The boss from hell”—the authors bring their lessons to life, from business life to family life.

The Leader in Me: How Schools and Parents Around the World Are Inspiring Greatness, One Child at a Time

Stephen R. Covey

The world has entered an era of the most profound and challenging change in human history. Most of our children are not prepared, and we know it.

Parents around the world see the change and know that the traditional three R’s — reading, writing, and arithmetic — are necessary, but not enough. Their children need to become far more responsible, creative, and tolerant of differences. They need to increase their ability to think for themselves, take initiative, get along with others, and solve problems.

Business leaders are not finding people whose skills and character match the demands of today’s global economy, including strong communication, teamwork, analytical, technology, and organizational skills. They need young people who are self-motivated, creative, and have a strong work ethic.

How will we bridge this ever-widening gap? The Leader in Me is the story of the extraordinary schools, parents, and business leaders around the world who are preparing the next generation to meet the great challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century.

In 1999, the A.B. Combs Elementary School in North Carolina was on the verge of being cut as a magnet school and needed to find new ways to educate its students. Teachers and administrators began teaching practical, principle-based leadership skills — with remarkable results. In a short time, the number of students passing end-of-grade tests vaulted from 84 to 97 percent. Simultaneously, the school began reporting significant increases in students’ self-confidence, dramatic drops in discipline problems, and striking increases in teacher and administrator job satisfaction. Parents, meanwhile, reported equivalent improvements in their children’s attitudes and behavior at home. As news of the school’s success spread, schools around the world began adopting the mantra to “develop leaders, one child at a time.” Business and civic leaders started partnering with schools in their communities to sponsor teacher training and student resources. Each school and family approached the principles differently, but the results were the same — attentive, energized young people engaging in the world around them.

The best way to prepare the next generation for the future is to emphasize the value of communication, cooperation, initiative, and unique, individual talent — for nothing undermines confidence more than comparison. Whether in the classroom or at home, it is never too early to start applying leadership skills to everyday life. Drawing on the many techniques and examples that have already seen incredible success around the world, The Leader in Me shows how easy it is to incorporate these skills into daily life. It is a timely answer to many of the challenges facing today’s young people, businesses, parents, and educators — one that is perfectly matched to the global demands of the twenty-first century.
